Install Digital Load Cells

Digital load cell installation for truck scales and heavy industry

How to Install Digital Load Cells Correctly

UNICELL Sensors Heavy Industry Load Cell Solutions

Digital load cells can improve diagnostics, signal stability and service speed, but only when the mechanical installation, wiring, addressing and calibration are done carefully.

For truck scales, the installation must consider foundation level, mounting kits, cable protection, grounding, load cell address mapping and corner adjustment records.

UNICELL Sensors supports digital load cell installation review for truck scales, weighbridges, tank weighing and silo weighing systems.

OIML / NTEP RS485 Digital Truck Scales Field Service
Installation focus Why it matters Service note
Mechanical seating Load must transfer vertically and evenly into each load cell. Check foundation, mounts, shims and anti-rotation parts before calibration.
Cable and junction box Digital communication needs clean wiring and good shielding. Separate signal cables from power cables where possible.
Address mapping Each digital load cell must match its real physical position. Record address, corner location and cable route for future service.
Calibration Zero, span and corner checks confirm the scale is ready for use. Never use calibration to hide mechanical binding or poor installation.

1. Check the structure before installing the load cells

Before mounting any load cell, inspect the weighbridge, foundation, mounting plates, limit stops and cable route. A digital load cell cannot correct a platform that is twisted, binding or sitting unevenly on the supports.

Check point What to inspect
Foundation Cracks, settlement, weak concrete, poor drainage and anchor condition.
Mounting kit Top plate, bottom plate, anti-rotation device, bearing surface and correct orientation.
Platform movement Side stops, end stops and clearance for thermal expansion.
Safety Support the platform correctly before removing or installing load cells.

2. Wire RS485 digital load cells carefully

Digital load cells usually communicate with the indicator through RS485 or another digital protocol. Correct wiring, shielding and grounding are important for long cable distance and stable communication.

Wiring item Practical recommendation
Power supply Confirm voltage range and polarity before energizing the system.
RS485 A/B Follow the actual product document; do not rely only on old cable colors.
Shield Connect shielding according to the indicator and junction box instructions.
Cable protection Use conduit or protected routing against water, rodents, vehicle damage and abrasion.

Practical note: When replacing an old digital load cell, confirm the communication protocol and indicator compatibility before connecting the new load cell.

3. Set address and record physical position

Each digital load cell must have a clear address. The address must match the physical position on the truck scale so the technician can identify each corner during calibration, troubleshooting and future maintenance.

Record Example
Load cell address 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08.
Physical position Front-left, front-right, middle-left, middle-right, rear-left, rear-right.
Cable route Which cable enters which terminal or junction box port.
Service data Zero, span, corner coefficient and final test weight result.

4. Perform corner adjustment and load test

After installation, the scale should be tested at each corner and along the weighing platform. If one position reads high or low, first inspect the mechanical condition, then adjust the corner coefficient through the digital indicator when appropriate.

Test step What to confirm
Zero check The empty scale returns to stable zero.
Corner test Each corner responds consistently with the same test load.
Span calibration The scale matches certified test weights or a verified test vehicle.
Repeatability The same load gives consistent results across repeated tests.
